Hong Kong Restaurant Newport is a cherished culinary gem nestled at 332 Barrenjoey Rd, Newport NSW. This authentic Chinese restaurant perfectly captures the heart and soul of traditional Australia-Chinese cuisine while offering a nostalgic dining experience that feels both comforting and exciting.
Step into a cozy, old-school ambiance where the decor invites a warm, family-style atmosphere reminiscent of a beloved neighborhood eatery. The charm here isn’t just in the setting but in every bite served at Hong Kong Restaurant Newport. Diners rave about the standout crispy skin chicken with ginger and shallot sauce — a dish so irresistible that Fletcher Davies awards it a phenomenal “1000/10.” This crispy, golden-skinned delight is perfectly balanced by the fragrant and sharp ginger-shallot sauce, delivering a harmony of textures and flavors that linger memorably long after the meal.
The menu pays respectful homage to classic Chinese fare but doesn’t shy away from adventurous touches that add a little excitement. Whether you’re craving traditional treats like san choy bow, lamb dishes, dim sums, prawn toast, or perfectly fried rice, each plate speaks to authenticity—with fresh ingredients and vibrant seasoning. What truly sets this restaurant apart is their thoughtful flexibility; vegetarian diners will appreciate the staff’s willingness to modify many dishes to suit their preferences without compromising flavor, a nod to inclusivity rarely found in establishments with such deep roots.
Service here is a character in its own right—friendly and genuine, though charmingly a bit unpolished, reflecting the restaurant’s long-standing local heritage rather than a polished corporate facade. The lady behind the counter, who has dedicated nearly 50 years to this very spot, embodies the restaurant’s spirit through her expertise and warm interaction, making guests feel like longtime friends rather than strangers passing through.
The dining vibe is relaxed and unpretentious; it’s not a Michelin-starred experience but one where the honesty of the food and robust flavors create a genuine connection. Reviews highlight that while service may occasionally be slow or a bit disorganized, the attentiveness and kindness of the staff shine through, creating an inviting place to enjoy a heartfelt meal. Whether dining in or opting for take-away, as H H points out, the flavors remain remarkable, proving that after so many years, Hong Kong Restaurant Newport still holds an enviable spot in the local culinary scene.
For locals and visitors alike, this is more than just a restaurant—it is a taste of tradition, an affectionate throwback, and a celebration of long-lasting community ties. If you find yourself on the Northern Beaches craving authentic Chinese food served with warmth and a sprinkle of nostalgia, Hong Kong Restaurant Newport is an absolute must-visit destination.

I don’t care what anyone says; this is the best Chinese restaurant in Australia. Crispy skin chicken with ginger and shallot sauce is a 1000/10.

Just tried this place for our first time since living in the area for 20 years. I’m so glad we did it’s great ! Old school Australia Chinese vibes, which is such a nice throw back to our childhoods. You can alter many dishes to be vegetarian if you wish, they are very flexible. The lady working has worked there for almost 50 years ! And she’s great at her job. Can’t wait to go back and try more dishes. Apologies the only photo I have is half way through the meal.

Had dinner here whilst in Newport. Walked in and we were able to get seats but there were only two of us. The service is a bit slow and disorganised but the staff were very nice and friendly. Initially got our order wrong but luckily we were able to see what the staff was writing down before she walked off. The food came on a timely manner and they were all delicious. I know some people find that they taste similar to each other, but the menu is also very extensive. Sometimes there are the same ingredients but different meat. So I think it depends on what you select. For drinks - cocktails are not their forte so I would suggest just having wine or other drinks that don't have to be mixed and made. No problem with the bill. Will be happy to dine here again.

Very good food with many choices! Loved the authenticity of this restaurant’s decor and food. We also enjoyed that they were not afraid to add an adventurous section which veered from traditional choices. Don’t miss this gem of a restaurant in Newport!

A good Chinese restaurant on the further end of the Northern Beaches! Wild. We came here mid week at about 5pm for a nice meal. We had san choy bow, lamb, dimmies, fried rice, prawn toast and others. Don’t expect a hatted restaurant or a Michelin star, but this place is charming and is a good time. Service and food were good.
